Botox Side Effects

Botox is the injection of a muscle toxin into the skin to treat particular wrinkles, such as wrinkles between the eyebrows.

The toxin is botulinum toxin from the bacteria in the Clostridia family, and interferes with the transmission of signals between the nerves and the muscle.

However, as with all cosmetic procedures, including injections, there are side effects to consider before deciding if this is something you want to do or not..

The side effects of Botox injections include both local and general side effects.

Botox side effects include the following:

Local reactions such as pain and bruising

Temporary facial droop

Headaches

Nausea

Flu like illness

Other rarer, more severe side effects that usually occur with non FDA approved versions of Botox

So when you’re thinking about Botox, you should be aware of these potential side effects and weight up the potential risks and benefits.

When discussing Botox as a possible treatment with your specialist such as dermatologist or plastic surgeon, make sure that you understand these side effects.

And there's another side effect of Botox which is that the areas of the face that haven't been treated with Botox, usually next to the areas that have been treated, that there more wrinkles start forming there.

As Dr David Becker from Cornell Medical College reveals:

"Patients receiving Botox injections to remove facial wrinkles, skin adjacent to the treatment area may become more wrinkled"

This is due to patients attempting to recreate facial expressions in the treated area where the treatment has paralysed their facial muscles, and thus cause more wrinkles.

So there you have it.

As mentioned, Botox is an invasive treatment when compared to wrinkle creams, and has these potential side effects.

Wrinkle creams in contrast are non invasive, and they have the benefit of providing antioxidants that are important to reduce future aging of the skin..
