Here are Dr. Perricone's ten superfoods:

Acai

The acai berry from the Amazon palm is packed with antioxidants, and is also rich in essential fatty acids and amino acids. It is reported to have 10 to 30 times the amount of anthocyanins present in red wine - quite impressive. The oils in the acai berry, the monounsaturated oleic acid. Dr. Perricone recommends acai because of all these nutrients. And yes, it does taste like a blend of berries and chocolate! It is available as pulp or as dried powder and is easy to eat as well as having great nutrition. You can have it with yoghurt as a part of breakfast or as a snack.

The Allium Family

Haven't heard of the allium family? Well they are garlic, leeks, onions and chives. This food group is beneficial as they contain a nutrient called flavonoids which boosts the liver's production of glutathione. What does glutathione do? It helps the body eliminate toxins. In particular, garlic with its active ingredient allicin, lowers cholesterol, blood pressure, prevention of heart disease and stimulates natural killer cells of the immune system to fight cancerous cells and infections. Onions helps the immune system function, increases the good cholesterol in the blood (HDL) and contain antioxidants including sulphur and quercetin.

Barley

Barley is a grain which has many benefits including the fact that it's a source of fiber, both soluble and insoluble which people in the Western society do not get enough of. What do these do? They help the body by reducing cholesterol absorption and promotes healthier gut functioning respectively important for health and wellness. It is also low GI, which is good for maintaining stable blood sugar levels. The best form is to use the barley with the hull intact, as many of the nutritious nutrients and fiber is in the hull.

Beans & Lentils

These wholesome super foods, beans and lentils, a staple of many healthy societies, have many benefits. These foods are rich in protein, fiber and antioxidants. Plus they are low GI, which is essential for weight control, stable sugar levels, and less oxidative stress on the body, and this includes the skin. And fiber is essential for gut health, which is the first line of defence against external toxins. And there are plenty of ways to eat these foods, including dahl, hummous and bean salads.

Buckwheat

This grain is both low GI and gluten free, a great combination. Plus it's high in protein. The beneficial efects? It helps to reduce cholesterol levels, maintain stable blood glucose levels as well as reduce blood pressure. Ways to eat it? This include the roasted buckwheat groats from Europe made into kasha, and the buckwheat 'soba' noodles from Japan which takes only a few minutes to cook.

Green Foods

There's something about the green foods that appeal to everybody. When you take them, you can often feel yourself healthier and more vibrant. The green foods include wheat grass and barley grass. Many companies now produce dried powders of these together with spirulina and chlorella. The alternative to dried powder is freshly juiced young grasses. These green foods are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, phytonutrients, cholophyll and fiber which are great for cholesterol, blood pressure and overall health. If your vegetable intake is low, then this could be an effective way to boost your nutrient intake.

Hot Peppers

Whether it is capsicums or chillis, these hot peppers contain compounds that are beneficial to health. Capsaicin is anti inflammatory, vitamin C and flavanoids are also great antioxidants. These foods can really spice up dishes and recipes for those who prefer to have spicy food and is a great way to have these nutrients at the same time. Roasted capsicum or fresh, raw peppers and chillies are great as well.

Nuts & Seeds

Nuts are great for skin and health because they contain the beneficial monounstarated oils. The benefits include reduced risk of heart disease as shown in medical studies, and possibly reduced risk of cancer due to it being a rich source of polyphenols, a potent antioxidant. Some favorite nuts include raw walnuts, and soaked or roasted almonds, and Brazil nuts, high in selenium. Eat a modest amount of nuts, as they are calorie rich.

Sprouts

Sprouts have been long know for their nutritious benefits. Being young plants and eaten raw, they are packed with vitamins and live enzymes not present in cooked food. There are a variety of sprouts avaialble, or you could, if you wanted to, sprout them yourself. Either way, they are great in salads or sandwiches, and taste great. Ensure they are fresh though, as this will give you the best levels of nutrients as well as taste. These foods are also featured highly in the raw food diet.

Yoghurt & Kefir

Yoghurt is a superfood because of the many roles it plays in maintaining optimum health. They are low GI for starters and this is important in maintaining stable sugar levels in the blood. They also contain probiotics, the friendly bacteria the body needs to maintain good bowel health. And the bowels are the first line of defence in the body against toxins from foods that we intake. And the other benefit is weight loss. Yoghurt, as a part of a sensible diet, helps assist in fat loss. Kefir is a more liquid version of yoghurt which has its own distinctive taste, hailing from Russia (and has a rich history) and stimulates the immune system.

So there you go.

When your diet changes to include healthy foods, including these superfoods, you notice changes in your body including increased energy, clarity of mind, stable moods and better overall performance.

And it's very easy to include these foods everyday.

For example, my favorite way to start the day is with this breakfast:

  • Avocado 1/2 (the beneficial monounsaturated oils) and unprocessed creamed honey (lower GI than sugar), then

  • Yoghurt with frozen or fresh blueberries (antioxidants)

  • Wheat grass, barley grass, spirulina and chlorella drink, dried powder mixed with water (chorophyll, antioxidants, fiber)
